Case Study: Accessibility Training for Deloitte UX Teams
- Client: Deloitte (via Juno College)
- Role: Accessibility Educator & Content Creator
- Year: 2018
- Focus: Design-Phase Remediation & Enterprise Training
Overview
In 2018, I was commissioned by Juno College of Technology to develop and deliver a comprehensive, half-day accessibility workshop for the UX and Design teams at Deloitte. The goal was to empower their creative professionals to integrate inclusive design principles at the earliest stages of the product lifecycle.
The Challenge
Enterprise-level design teams often face the challenge of "retrofitting" accessibility—fixing issues after a product has been built. Deloitte sought to bridge this gap by training their UXers to identify and solve accessibility barriers during the wireframing and prototyping phases, reducing long-term remediation costs and improving the user experience for everyone.
The Solution
I authored and facilitated a high-impact workshop titled "Web Accessibility for Designers." This session was tailored specifically for the needs of modern design workflows, moving beyond code-heavy explanations to focus on visual and structural inclusivity.
Key Curriculum Highlights:
- Color & contrast: Deep dives into WCAG 2.1 AA/AAA requirements for text, UI components, and graphical objects.
- Typography & readability: Designing for low vision and cognitive disabilities through optimal line height, font choice, and layout spacing.
- Interaction design: Planning for keyboard-only and screen reader navigation within complex design patterns.
- Form design & error handling: Strategies for inclusive labeling, clear error states, and cognitive load reduction.
The Impact
The workshop was delivered to a large cohort of Deloitte UX professionals and was met with high engagement. By fostering a deep discussion on the intersection of aesthetics and inclusivity, the session provided the team with actionable tools to ensure their design deliverables were accessible from day one.
