Case Study: Founding & Leading Accessibility at Shopify
- Company: Shopify
- Role: Accessibility Specialist / Program Management Lead
- Tenure: 2017 – 2026
- Focus: Program Leadership, AI Integration, and Ecosystem Strategy
Overview
Over the course of eight and a half years, I pioneered the accessibility discipline at Shopify. What began as a self-carved role evolved into a global program that touched every corner of the Shopify ecosystem—from the internal product teams and third-party partners to the millions of merchants and billions of buyers they serve.
The Challenge
Shopify is a decentralized, high-velocity environment with a massive technical surface area. The challenge was not just fixing bugs, but shifting the culture of a global tech giant to move away from "retrofitting" accessibility and toward a sustainable, "inclusive-by-design" workflow.
The Solution: Building the "Shift-Left" Infrastructure
I drove the strategic roadmap for the global accessibility program, focusing on three core pillars:
1. Modernizing the Tech Stack with AI
I leveraged emerging technologies to solve for scale, ensuring accessibility wasn't a bottleneck but an innovation driver:
- AI automation: Integrated Evinced for automated scanning and architected custom AI Skills for AI agents, providing real-time, automated guidance to decentralized development teams.
- Defect remediation: Orchestrated the use of AI agents to directly fix accessibility defects, significantly accelerating the delivery of accessible products.
- Data synthesis: Utilized AI to aggregate fragmented data from GitHub, Slack, and automated scanners into unified dashboards to track compliance and drive leadership prioritization.
2. User-Centric Insights
I modernized Shopify's testing culture by integrating Fable , ensuring that product decisions were rooted in real usability testing with people with disabilities. I regularly hosted these sessions and translated quantifiable feedback into actionable items for product leads.
3. Strategic Policy & Compliance
I managed the "high-stakes" side of accessibility by:
- Conducting manual and automated WCAG 2.2 AA audits for core digital properties.
- Authoring VPATs and reviewing third-party integrations (e.g., PayPal, Google).
- Partnering with legal counsel and product leadership to mitigate risk and establish internal inclusive design policies.
The Impact
In my eight years at Shopify, I transformed accessibility from a niche concern into a core component of the product success criteria. By establishing an "inclusive design workflow" and socializing Figma annotations and documentation, I helped ensure that the future of commerce is one where everyone can participate.
Key Competencies Demonstrated:
- Program management: Managed complex dependencies among cross-functional teams.
- Vendor management: Orchestrated relationships with specialized accessibility vendors.
- Technical writing: Contributed extensively to the Merchant, UX, and Partner blogs.
- Mentorship: Hosted office hours and provided guidance to hundreds of partners and merchants.
